When it comes to caring for the planet, April 22 is a key date on the calendar that reminds us of the shared responsibility we have as a society—both individuals and companies—to work every day to protect natural resources. We can take it as a call to action, a reminder of the importance of devising strategies and carrying out actions that positively impact the environment and thereby reinforce our commitment to sustainability.

Origin

Earth Day was first established on April 22, 1970, spearheaded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, who sought to create public awareness about environmental issues. His initiative succeeded in mobilizing millions of people in the United States, marking the beginning of a global environmental movement. Since then, every April 22 has become a worldwide celebration, recognized by the United Nations in 2009, bringing together communities, organizations, and governments in defense of the environment.

A Call to Action

This key date is a moment to celebrate the progress made in environmental matters, but also to acknowledge the remaining challenges and commit to concrete actions to overcome them. Specifically, from companies, there is much that can be contributed to conserve biodiversity, promote the use of clean and renewable energies, and combat pollution and climate change. Taking concrete actions involves getting involved and joining a global community concerned about a greener and fairer world for all.

Some of these actions can include:

  1. Acting ethically and transparently in business management. Respect for human rights, long-term business strategy, ethics and transparency in business management, fair competition.

  2. Collaborating with strategic partners to enhance business opportunities. Promotion of social responsibility in the supply chain, assessment and development of suppliers, combating child labor.

  3. Developing people in their human and economic dimensions. Temporary staff management, occupational health and safety, diversity and equal opportunities, attraction, development, and retention of talent, work-life balance.

  4. Understanding the needs of our customers and meeting them with integrity. Promotion of healthy lifestyles, food safety, customer care.

  5. Using natural resources consciously and responsibly. Efficient use of water, sustainable agriculture, waste management, sustainable soil management, effluent management, biodiversity protection, climate change, and ecosystem conservation. Energy efficiency.

  6. Promoting the well-being and social development of communities. Education, development, health.

Every action counts, and we all have a role to play in protecting our unique and valuable planet.
